The New Expansion
From my recent play on Singularity, I believe that the new expansion is nothing to wet your pants over. Here are some reasons why:
- It is trying to force people into PvP.
There are “zones” for combat to take over a solar system. These places are in low sec systems. When I was on my way to the system, I thought, what if some pirate camped at a gate that was right out of a combat zone. He would have lots of chances for striking down on someone, even though that person is going to fight for their faction. What good will you do if you arrive in a pod?
- Betrayal can happen.
When you are amidst 100 or so ships shooting and firing at each other, you have no idea who is shooting at who, except for the red boxes. What if someone on your own side turns on you because you have a high bounty? You think all is fine and dandy because your shooting at your opponent, but don’t realize your allies are shooting at you. There is no police in low sec, remember?
- Inflated economy.
I don’t wanna lose my ship every 20 minutes. Where can I get the money to cover for my insurance and modules? Bounties? Phhh… Insurance ain’t gonna cover for a new ship + insurance + T2 mods (or even some mods). Those who are making the ships can jack up the prices and earn big, while the soldiers lose money. For what? A solar system you don’t ever need to go into?
It just doesn’t seem like a whole new big experience for me. Sure, somethings change, but I’m a carebear, and hey, a lot of EVE players are carebears. What are we going to do? I doubt they will enjoy being blown up and go back for more of that. It just doesn’t seem all that fun.
Besides, wouldn’t you just rather raise your standing, get a jump clone, buy a cheap frig, and go pirate some random guys?

Forcing people into PvP:
Er.. if you have joined a militia and are on your way to a FW combat zone.. didn’t you consent to PvP already?
Betrayals:
Betrayals happen now. Betrayals will happen in Empyrean Age. Nobody’s forcing you to join that PuG blob. Fly with people you can trust.
Inflation:
You have to remember that there’s always two sides in an economic transaction: The buyer and the seller. If people lose a lot of ships, they don’t have the money to buy new ships. Thus the industrialists lose sales. Unless they want to get stuck with a huge inventory of ships, equipment and ammo most people can’t afford to buy.. they’ll have to lower their prices.
Inflation is not the same thing as price-gouging. Inflation is the overall decrease of the value of money. If money is taken out of the circulation (in the form of investments lost in destroyed ships), the remaining money in circulation gains value. If money exists circulation faster than it enters it (via miners and mission-runners), you’ll see an overall decrease of prices. That’s deflation, the opposite of inflation.
I ment, as the game mechanics are trying to get you to enter PvP.
But if you want to defend your territory, what are you gonna do? Can’t block people from entering the combat zone.
Isn’t inflation when the prices of items increase? When the market is saturated with items and those PvPers want to buy a new ship, the sellers won’t just lower their prices to fit their needs. Remember, PvEers are still buying ships. The prices won’t likely to decrease, but increase of the increased demand.
Thanks for the responce Shirrath :D
…I ment, as the game mechanics are trying to get you to enter PvP….
Er.. I thought that CCP did say quite unambigiously that FW is an attempt to give people a PvP stepping stone on the way to 0.0 wars. However, that’s entirely voluntary. If you don’t join a militia, you’re free to go about your business as usual. However.. if you do sign up for a militia, you’re indicating that you do want to PvP. Anytime, anywhere. It doesn’t really matter that much whether you’re being shot by a pirate or an opposing faction militia member, now does it?
..But if you want to defend your territory, what are you gonna do? Can’t block people from entering the combat zone…
You could always join that fleet of friends you trust.
..Isn’t inflation when the prices of items increase?..
Yes it is, but it’s an uniform rise on all prices caused increased total wealth in the economy, not just price-gouging on some goods. Please re-read my comment. There’s no point in increasing prices if there’s not enough people who can accord to pay those prices. Making money isn’t just about the profit margin, it’s also about the volume of sales. You have to balance those two factors to maximize your income.
Some good points there Viperx.
I’m not worried about “forcing into pvp” as someone said, you have to seek out for this to happen.
However this whole militia combat tries to mimick 0.0 alliance warfare, at which i think it will fail. Alliances consist of ppl who work together, trust eachother, and have common, real-isk interests. While in here, you are right - someone from your gang might be shooting you and you wouldn’t notice. Insane, this has got to be addressed.
I see a lot of potential room for griefers / exploits , and we all know there are ppl in eve who enjoy this kind of gameplay.
I wouldn’t worry about “spoiling” the mechanism of economy.
However my main point is that, ppl just wont participate in faction warfare. Because of no isk gain. No interest. I mean no SIGNIFICANT one. Agent payouts? Bountys? Come on. We all know this is gonna be failure. 0.0 warfare is based on reimbursement, corp mining, defending poses - all those directly or not build your wealth big time. Would you go for an op for 5 mil isk reward *without any added value*?
Nice blog. Very valid concerns about Factional Warfare, but do browse the most decent dev blog about it and it will address some of those concerns. The recent podcast by The Drone Bay covers some of their own concerns about FW as well.
1) .. forced pvp..
No. You have to actively join militia corps to partake in FW, and only then will the faction navy shoot you if you enter hostile grounds. If you are passing through high sec as an individual not related to any faction, nobody’s gonna be able to stop you (except suicide ganking, but that’s old news). In other words, don’t get your hauler alts to join factional militias…
2) …blobs preventing anyone from entering zones…
Yes, that might actually happen. But my impression is that there would not be enough trust or cohesion in an NPC militia for anyone to truly step up and risk their big/capital ships. For all you know, someone on your side might be a killmail whore and want cap kills, no matter whose it is. The ‘betrayal’ part of EVE may actually help reduce the blob factor in FW, although I wouldn’t count too much on it considering recent events involving titan kills in 0.0. Will have to see on this one.
3) ..lose ships every 20 minutes, inflated market…
Um. What do you think happens to new pvpers? Low sec, 0.0, everywhere. It’s the ship losses that buoys the market. If anything, this will ease the bearish market brought about by changes to T2 invention. Good news for carebears! I love selling ships after a huge blob war!
4) … just go pirate….
There’s a HUGE difference between pirating and FW. For one, you get security status hits pirating in low sec. FW is “Concord-approved” pvp, meant for newer players (imo) to get their feet wet into what is similar to 0.0 territorial warfare. It’s a completely different concept from pirating, where they hunt and grief anyone viewed as easy pickings. Don’t forget that FW occurs in high sec as well.
[quote] Would you go for an op for 5 mil isk reward *without any added value*?
We don’t even get any monetary gains in 0.0 warfare, and risk of losing ships are huge in lag and blobfests. Yet, huge territoral fights occur on a daily basis… And -most- pvpers don’t get much isk living in 0.0, for the ship turnover rate anyway. At least you get mission loot, LP, and isk from factional warfare!
Don’t fret so much. If you don’t want to pvp, just don’t join factional militias. Carebear types would be fine doing the things they were doing. Me, I’d love to go blow up ships, but I’m already in an alliance and do so frequently…
Just make sure to set long skill training for the patch day…
Well thanks for all the responces.
I can’t wait until more people actually try this.
Then we will see what happens, but until then, fly safe!
