EVE Blog Banter #8

To banter or not to banter. Well this time I have decided to banter…

Welcome to the eighth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Check out the other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month’s topic comes to us from Ga’len at The Wandering Druid of Tranquility.  He asks: “What new game mechanic or mechanics would you like to see created and brought into the EVE Online universe and how would this be incorporated into the current game universe?  Be specific and give details, this is not meant to be a ‘nerf this, boost my game play’ post like we see on the EVE forums.”

It was night, some would consider it, but for the capsuleers that roam these skies it was just another jump.

A Celestis pilot drops out of warp close to the stargate, but before he jumped through he caught a glimpse. A shiny something. Directing his camera drones to the Concord sanctioned holographic billboard, he saw a video playing which at the end had the message, “VISIT EVE’S WEEKEND WARRIOR TODAY!”.

While the pilot looks up that name on the regional Aura network before jumping, an Anathema floats cloaked a hundred clicks out. The pilot monitoring the traffic out of the system for his corporation’s war targets.

But between switching a few buttons he is reading a newsreel from the #1 most read and most trusted source of information in New Eden, the Tribune. He reads the great section about null sec war zones and dreamed about his future while a target battleship slipped before the inattentive pilot.

Amidst all this a Charon freighter pilot wakes in his pod 2 jumps into the 27 jump trip he has planned on autopilot. He was cursing; the giant ship was stuck in space bumping uncontrollably up and down while facing a huge screen playing the latest debut of a holoreel, Clear Skies 3!

In Case You Missed It

I would love to see the following 5 things.

  1. Player advertisements on larger Concord billboards that can be
bought with price based on system/gate popularity.
  2. Player made news firms distributing “news” through purchasable items
in specific stations that they have a contract with.
  3. Movies playing on the billboards.
  4. More billboards aligned to be in the way of AP freighters.
  5. More community stuff in the game.

“More billboards aligned to be in the way of AP freighters”

This would be sweet. I think that in order to do this there would have to be a major overhaul of the in game browser. Maybe Firefox EVE Edition or something.

At any rate, in order for a site to advertise on the banners they should have to be on the Fansites list that is kept on eveonline.com and they should have to keep advertisements “In Character” , so not to detract from the mood of the game.

Definitely agree. Simply improving the IGB would be a good start.

The player advertisement idea isnt bad at all :). Would be nice if we’d have shops to go with that though !

A long time ago CCP lost the coder that made the boards, the original boards sat in space giving out information.

When I asked keiron once why we couldn’t do just what you want he replied “when the coder went he also took the knowledge on how to implement said function”

This is the main reason we have new boards in space, to replace code that nobody seemingly knew how to work, not as odd as you may think.

So now we have the new boards they are supposed to implement this feature and have been planning on it for at least 5 years. However this is CCP. You will be lucky to see this within the next 5 years, by which time we all will be playing better games I imagine.

As for the block AP Freighters, won’t happen. the whole code makes the new boards transperent to ships for just that reason, to NEVER interfere with them again, and so it should be. It is incredibly annoying to be killed by a WT just because you are stuck on a billboard and cannot get off, I know because the guy I killed told me so. I actualy felt sorry for him. Still popped his ass mind :)

Yes I would have to agree.

@Biomassed/Hitch
Stupid code! Why isn’t CCP competent enough to redesign or fix the damn thing?
