Review – Hyperion

The Hyperion is a tier 3 battleship, and one of the better ones too!

One of the first things I noticed about this baby was it’s massive size. When you fly this beside a Raven, it looks more than twice as big!

I think this ship is the peak of engineering from the Gallente engineers. The massive tank that is able to be fitted along with the huge damage output, there is no other similar ship that will match it’s raw power. Almost anything is possible with this ship because of it’s design. The top 8 slots can be fitted for a variety of tasks and the 6 low slots can be used in a myriad of ways. The only drawback is it’s cost; 140 million for the ship alone, about 50 million than the Raven or the Megathron!

The bonus on the ship fits perfectly in my mind for it’s purpose. I mainly use it as a mission runner so the damage comes in quite nicely as well as the armor repping bonus. With one named armor repper, 2 hardeners, and one or two rigs, it can easily tank most level 4’s. Every once a while the guns will strike for 400 or 500 damage per shot and that usually can take down a cruiser into it’s armor; keep I’m mind that’s only one gun! For PvP, a blasters setup will also take advantage of the bonuses, but again, I think that the bonuses on this ship does not fit with it’s description and is backwards with the Rokh. Blasters need more range since they are so close ranged. The powergrid is just a bit low to fit a full rack or 425mm easily with a great tank and damage mods since it’s necessary to utilize some of the low slots for power diagnostics or reactor control units, unlike the Rokh. But all in all, it works for me.

From the range of fits available to be put on, a few stand out more than others. The high slots can be fitted with 425mm railguns to extend the range to beyond 100km for sniping other ships. To complement the 8 guns, 3 magnetic field stabilizers can be put on half of the low slots, along with tracking enhancers and a little bit of tank in case trouble comes along and a reactor control to fit all of the large guns. Mid slots are mostly for capacitor regeneration and a MWD to keep the distance between the sniper and the victim, but a sensor booster with a targeting range script used will help achieve the locking range that we want for sniping. One or two tracking computers with range scripts will also help, but if you are using large guns and T2 ammo, only 1 tracking computer is usually used. As long as the guns can keep going and hitting and the ship is moving, the battle is in your favor!

For a lot of the mission runners this is an excellent ship to blow up those high bounty NPC battleships. I usually try to setup my ship with 6 350mm railguns and 2 425mm railguns. This weaponry setup allows for excellent battleship popping and the guns can still track cruiser sized ships while maintaining good range. Especially useful for killing larger ships, but the frigates will outrun the tracking on the guns so drones are your friends! If there are more cruisers than battlecruisers or battleships then I would fit out a whole rack of 8 350mm railguns as they have much better tracking while maintaining good damage.

The mid slots might seem easy to load out on a missioning-armor-tanking-battleship, but with the large guns installed, sometimes it is necessary to install a tracking computer with some tracking scripts in the cargo or use a webifier to any cruisers that get too close. A target painter will help with hitting the smaller things far away, and then the rest of the rack with cap rechargers. Afterburners aren’t really necessary in missions as you can adjust the range of the guns with different ammo or by using scripts and remember, it just sucks more cap from your tank. Of course, microwarpdrives are useless in deadspaces. Sensor boosters or other arrays again aren’t used much my mission runners since the NPC’s don’t jam you besides the Guristas. Even then, there isn’t much to worry. The targeting range on this ship sucks, but as you slowboat it to the objective you will get in range anyways, and the NPC’s won’t ever leave your range; unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Low slots are fitted with the regular armor tank. I prefer more DPS over tank on most missions since they aren’t much of a problem in an armor tank, especially when it is perma-run.

Drones, drones, drones! It’s a Gallente ship and I almost forgot to include anything about drones! For PvP sniping situations, a EVE’s dozen of 5 Warrior II’s will make those tackers think twice before making their way over to you and another dozen of medium ECM drones in case you get scrambled or webbed. If you don’t trust ECM drones, a nice group of medium armor repping bots will help your fleet mates along, that never hurts! In missions, a few medium hammerheads and small hobgoblins will help take care of the enemies that get below your guns. I keep one web drone in the bay for those really fast frigates or if I need even more tracking against a Sansha battleship or cruiser.

I was able to secure this ship at a fairly cheap price, 150 million with 2/3’s of the rigs I want already installed on it! But if you can’t find a good deal like this, then it will cost you about 140 million for the ship itself, then another 10 to 60 million depending on what type of rigs you wish to jury on to this baby. Buying a good setup with T2 modules will add about 10 mil for the high rack, 4 mil for the mid slots, and 2 mil for the low slots. Don’t forget about the drones, about 7 or 8 mil for a handful of small and medium T2 drones. Let me ring that up for you in Jita and the total comes to about… anywhere from 175 to 234 million?

Whoa! A hefty price, but I thing it’s a great ship to blow missions through!

I Guess It’s A Learning Process

Boo!

Halloween is creepy. Bad things can happen. Well in my case, bad things did happen.

My great corp mates were helping me with Enemies Abound, 5 of 5. You know, the one where the ships respawned every 4 minutes for 6 waves. Anyways, with 3 trusty battleships (2 Ravens, 1 Hyperion) and an ever so popular battlecruiser (Drake), we managed to get through it all in less than 30 minutes.

At least until those damn ninja-salvagers arrive as we were about to finish the last wave. First one showed up, a Thrasher, salvaging all our stuff. Then a Cormorant. Arg!  We quickly ran through the mission and grabbed the salvagers of our own. It was a race to the last wreck with 5 salvagers doing stuff. The tractor beams favored us and in the end we had a little bit of salvage and all of the loot.

I flew my Badger back to pickup the stuff and suddenly one of the ships steals from our can! The one in the Thrasher came back in a Rupture and waited for our next move.

We decided to have some fun so I got my Thorax and Saft got his new Harpy. When we came back the guys were about 80 clicks out. The Harpy caught up to one until it flew away before it was jammed. So we went for the Rupture.

I warped out since now I am 100+ clicks out from them. We have yet aggroed them so I thought sure. My adrenaline was pumping and meanwhile our other 2 pilots went to get their other ships. One Raven and one fighting Corm. Saft engaged before I was able to have warped in on him so his Harpy was webbed, scram’ed, and killed. Mid warp I prepared for the fight.

As soon I dropped out he was looking at the Harpy’s wreck. I scram’ed, launched my drones, and fired. The 5 heavy ion cannons pounded into his shield and armor while he webbed me and took me into my armor. Ah, I was just winning by a little bit! As the 5 hammerheads shoot and my guns cycles, both of our armor melted away.

I am in my hull and him also. “Damn it, get him my drones!” I yelled. But in the end my tank broke and he lived with 1 to 3 percent hull. Nooo! He began to loot my wreck so I decided to go grab my Vexor. Zoe pipes to me that he was in system in his Raven ready to go. I confirmed and warped to my wreck.

Jeez, now that other guy was back and the one I was looking for left, probably to lick his wounds. I locked and killed this thief and scavenger and looted our stuff back.

Now here was where I made my biggest mistake.

I called for Zoe to have warped in on me. Now I spot another Rupture next to my Vexor. Guns heated up and turned on the Rupture while my massive drones ate away at it. He melted my shields but had a little trouble with my armor tank. I also had the same problem.

Zoe showed up in his Raven and launched his cruise missiles at our foe. All of a sudden the Pigs show up and ruins the party; in no time the Raven succumbed.

Jesus, it’s time to GTFO. I launched my ECM drones in hopes to get a jam cycle and break this guy’s lock. Oh please, oh please!

Yes! It worked and I docked up. The loses were pretty staggering for this one little mission – 15 million for the Thorax loss, 30 for the Harpy, and who knows what for the Raven. Our inflicted damage? 20 million to that annoying salavager. I was able to pickup most of the loot that we lost so that lessened the hurt some what.

In the end, I have learned that:

  • Aggression is really weird, your corp mates can’t shoot at who’s killing you
  • Always think before shooting
  • Fleet and corp members do not get to shoot just because this guy is shooting you
  • Have a plan or backup that will work

I hope you can learn from my mistakes. Tomorrow will be a day to regain the losses. I will be running missions and donating to my friends! Till next time, fly safe!

Factional Warefare Testing

Ah, how great it is to roam around in 0.0 space without a worry. Tonight I got on to Singularity and flew around the universe of EVE.

I was able to find 2 systems of battle and war. Many players filled these places, along with a few of the employees of CCP fixing bugs, helping out the people, and having some fun from their intensive job.

Here are some screen shots I took while online, amidst of the battles, because I was thinking of you.
